From waste to biotherapeutics – BioECOLogics

Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia has announced a public call for applications for scientific research projects within the IDEAS Program. In the field of natural sciences, the BioECOLogics project was rated the best. The multidisciplinary team of this project represents 14 scientists from four institutions: the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering, University of Belgrade, the Faculty of Science, University of Kragujevac, the Institute for Information Technologies Kragujevac, University of Kragujevac and the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.

In the next three years, researchers will develop a new generation of eco-biotherapeutics from different waste sources. The project team will make new therapeutics with the help of microorganisms that can not only grow in waste, but also produce bioactive molecules. These molecules will be isolated and combined with different metal ions in order to try to approach a pharmaceutical use.

The goal of the project is a design of new generation of eco-biotherapeutics, which responds to environmental challenges, but also to the challenges of the lack of new antibiotics and anticancer drugs. Researchers expect to fully develop a technology from waste to biotherapeutics, to use the bioprocess to obtain at least five new biotherapeutics based on bacterial natural products as well as new formulations of biotherapeutics based on metal ions and biopolymers.

The BioECOLogics project will contribute to the inclusion of Serbian scientific, development and innovation capacities in global trends. The idea from waste to sustainable biotherapeutics is completely new and will place this research at the top of global efforts to use biotechnological solutions to make our food, cosmetics, clothing, consumables and other products become greener and more sustainable.
