Scientific Research Center for Experimental Chemistry

Research in this center is directed towards the application of the synthesis of various organic compounds, molecules of Schiff bases and heterocyclic systems with pronounced antibacterial, antifungal and anticancer activities. The main goal of scientific research work is based on the synthesis of ligands and complexes of transition metal ions (platinum, palladium, ruthenium and gold), and the development of methods and alternative synthetic procedures for the synthesis of pharmacologically significant compounds, potential drugs such as cytostatics and antibiotics.

Another line of research includes the study of the interactions of newly synthesized compounds with biomacromolecules, such as nucleic acids, proteins and specific enzymes, using various spectroscopic (NMR, UV-Vis, fluorimetry and viscometry) and theoretical (DFT, docking analysis, molecular dynamics) methods. The lipophilicity (logP) of the synthesized compounds and the influence of the structure on the biological activity are studied. The effect on tumor cells, cell cycle, toxicity on healthy cells, redox potential and the possibility of creating oxygen radicals that cause cell death are examined. The broader interest is to synthesize a new generation of metallotherapeutics and find candidates whose selectivity and efficiency are higher, and cytotoxicity is lower compared to the metallotherapeutics currently used in the clinic. A special part of the research is focused on the phytochemical and pharmacological characterization of extracts of medicinal plants, fruits of autochthonous fruit varieties and their products. Biologically active natural products that can be potential sources of new medicinal active principles and dietary supplements are also being tested. The phytochemical composition is analyzed using modern chromatographic methods, such as HPTLC, HPLC and LC-MS. The biological and pharmacological potential of the samples is tested in different systems, in vitro, in vivo and in silico conditions, with a special focus on antioxidant activity (a large number of spectrophotometric methods), redox status (determining the level of oxidative stress) and anti-inflammatory effects of the tested samples.

These researches include the examination of selected medicinal plant species in the prevention and treatment of gynecological diseases, as well as the effects on the reproductive system as a whole. Then, it includes the design and synthesis of carriers of active substances by means of which they would manifest their positive biological effects to the greatest extent in various model systems. The ultimate goal of these researches is to reach natural products with high biological potential that can be used in the prevention or treatment of various diseases. , as well as in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry.
